1. Som-Tam

Ingredients such as cucumber, carrot and radish are added and you can also expect to find sour lime, hot chili, salty and a fish flavour.

2. KaengKhee-o Whan

The English equivalent to this dish is a Thai green curry. Green curries tend to be as hot as red curries so it’s for the spice lovers among you. However it does have a sweeter taste to it than red curries do. In the curry, you will find coconut milk, eggplant, sugar, fish sauce, kaffir lime leaves and Thai basil leaves. The green curry paste is made with green chillies, lemongrass, shallots, garlic, galangal, kaffir lime peel, roasted coriander, cumin seeds, peppercorns, shrimp paste and salt. You can add a variety of meats or fish to you curry such as beef, pork or chicken and you will usually find this meal accompanied by rice or roti, an Indian style flatbread.

3. Pla-MukNeung Ma-Nao

Traditional food in Thailand: This dish is for seafood fans as it is steamed squid with lime and chili. This is a lovely fresh and healthy dish and the fresher the squid, the better texture and flavour you’ll get. In this dish you will taste red and green chilies, garlic, fish sauce, lime juice, celery leaves and just a dash of sugar. This is usually a side dish but you could have it as a main if made in a bigger portion and with added extras.

4. Pad Pak

This is fried vegetables like a stir-fry and will accompany many other Thai dishes. The vegetables that are used vary but you may find carrots, bok choy, red peppers, spring onions, broccoli, spinach, shitake mushrooms, basil leaves and bamboo shoots. Some flavours you may also discover include garlic, chili, ginger or lime. Oyster sauce is sometimes included in this dish.

5. Khanom Chan

This incredible nine-layer desert mainly consists of flour, sugar, coconut milk and colouring. It’s often cooked for special occasions and the number nine in Thailand represents fortune and the word ‘nine’ in Thai sounds like progress. The cake is sweet and fragrant as the colours are completely natural and some come from herbs. The different layers mean various things such as promotion, progress, wealth, support and love.
